pH is a measure of a substance’s acidity or alkalinity—the scale ranges from 0 to 14, where 7 indicates a neutral pH. Cleaning products, depending on their pH, have different applications and effectiveness against specific types of dirt. Understanding this relationship allows you not only to clean but also to protect surfaces from damage. Types of dirt and the effectiveness of cleaning products

Not all types of dirt react the same way to cleaning products—their effectiveness depends largely on the type of dirt and the chemical pH of the product. Different types of dirt have different structures and properties, so properly selected products are needed to remove them. Some substances work better on mineral deposits, while others are effective against grease or organic stains. That is why the pH of a cleaning product is one of the key factors to consider when choosing a product.

Selecting a cleaning agent based on the type of surface

Not every surface can tolerate extreme pH values. When analyzing material tolerance on the pH scale, three groups can be distinguished:

  • Resistant materials (e.g., concrete, porcelain tile, clinker) – tolerate both acidic and alkaline conditions well (pH 2–13).
  • Moderately sensitive materials (e.g., PVC, linoleum, aluminum) – prefer a pH range of 6–11.
  • Sensitive materials (e.g., marble, wood, enamel)—these are best cleaned with neutral cleaners (pH 6–8), as both acids and bases can cause permanent damage.

Using an inappropriate cleaner risks permanently damaging the surface.

How to choose the right pH for the application?

In everyday practice, it is helpful to follow a simple guideline that takes into account both the nature of the dirt and the type of surface being cleaned.

  • Acidic cleaning agents (pH < 7) work by reacting chemically with mineral deposits, which are alkaline in nature. When an acidic cleaner comes into contact with such deposits, a neutralization reaction occurs—calcium, magnesium, or iron compounds are dissolved and can be easily removed from the surface. As a result, acidic cleaners are designed to remove limescale, rust, and other inorganic deposits. Their action is based on a strong chemical reaction, so they should be used with caution, especially on materials sensitive to low pH.
  • Alkaline cleaning agents (pH > 7) break down fat molecules and other organic substances thanks to their alkali content, which reacts with fats through a process of emulsification. As a result of this reaction, the fat disperses in water and no longer adheres to the surface. Additionally, alkalis can break down proteins and neutralize certain organic compounds, making them useful for removing kitchen, biological, or cosmetic stains. Alkaline cleaners often also have degreasing and penetrating properties, allowing them to thoroughly clean even hard-to-reach areas.
  • Neutral cleaning agents (pH ≈ 7) are gentler and do not cause strong chemical reactions. Their action is primarily physical—dissolving dirt with water, aided by mild surfactants. They do not aggressively interfere with the structure of the material or the dirt, making them safe for delicate surfaces and for daily, routine cleaning. Although they are not suitable for tackling tough stains or heavy grease, they work perfectly where the priority is to protect the surface and keep it clean on a daily basis.
